BD-5 Is the Wing the Culprit?

January 17, 1982. Jim Handelson is about to complete the fifth flight of his Kawasaki-powered BD-5B. The air is smooth. He calls in on the downwind leg and turns on the base leg. The turn is steep, his flaps and gear are down. The turn steepens into an apparent vertical dive. Impact is on the nose and the left wingtip. The wreck does not burn.
