Provided by Owen Wilson:  ZK-ZBD Octopushy (65 HP Hirth) belongs to Ian Griffin of New Plymouth (Taranaki). A beautiful Build, Has flown in Circuit only, luckily as had heating and vibration issues resulting in one engine failure, but not resulting in a crash.

Provided by Owen Wilson:  As far as I know, around 40 BD-5 Kits came into the country, intended for production at Hamilton’s NZ Aerospace Industries after the success of the CT-4 Airtourer/Airtrainer…. It morphed into Pacific Aerospace… and much later NZ Aeromotive. Jim Bede thought it would be an easier path to Certification to have another Overseas Country get the BD-5 Certified, and then bring it under the FAA Certification as a foreign Certified Aircraft… Sadly, the FAA wouldn’t let it happen, requiring full Stage Checks along the way, which required way too much cost in sending each part back to the States, and so the deal was lost. In the end, the same Engine problems would have stymied the Production anyway !!

Provided by Owen Wilson:  ZK-ZIP (Hirth Engine) belonged to Dave Rose of Auckland (since passed away) and was the first to fly in NZ, but crashed after an Engine Failure on it’s first official Test Flight in 1980 (had flown twice before…). Was rebuilt over 20 years, and crashed again, this time due to a Wing-Drop Stall on the flare over the threshold.

    NTSB ACCIDENT REPORT WPR11LA015

On October 14, 2010, at 1140 Pacific daylight time, an experimental Mischke BD-5D, N525BD, impacted the approach end of runway 22 at Skagit Regional Airport, Burlington, Washington.

The commercial pilot was operating the airplane under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The pilot sustained serious injuries; the airplane was substantially damaged. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local area flight.

The pilot submitted a written statement following the accident. After departing runway 10, the airplane rotated at 90 miles per hour (mph), he retracted the landing gear, and accelerated the airplane to 140 mph while climbing to 50 to 75 feet above ground level. The engine revolutions per minute (rpm) increased, then decreased from 9,000 to about 7,000, and he felt a loss of thrust in the airplane. He retarded the throttle and attempted an emergency landing on runway 22. The airplane landed hard short of the runway, with the landing gear retracted.

The pilot reported that the airplane was powered by a Yamaha Nytro snowmobile engine rated at 130 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. The engine ran at 8,000 rpm with the propeller at 4,000 rpm. Examination of the drive system revealed that the sprag clutch that connected the drive system had failed and the engine lost thrust.

A Dynon Avionics EFIS-D10A unit was recovered from the airplane and sent to the Safety Board Recorder Laboratory. Information regarding the flight track, ground, and altitude were obtained from the unit. Because the unit did not have a recent software upgrade, no additional information was recorded.

    ACCIDENT SUMMARY

The pilot of the privately owned Bede BD5-J aircraft (registration C-GBDV, serial number 4672) departed the Ottawa/Carp Airport, Ontario, at approximately 1205 eastern daylight time to practice his routine for the air show scheduled for the following two days. At approximately 1210, the pilot radioed that he was starting his final fly-past before landing. The routine for this low-speed fly-past called for a number of quick extensions and retractions of the aircraft’s landing gear while at a height about 500 feet above ground level. After several cycles of the landing gear, and while the landing gear was extended, the aircraft rolled sharply to the right. The nose dropped, and the aircraft descended rapidly and hit the ground. The aircraft was substantially damaged, and the pilot sustained fatal injuries.

The time has arrived to cut the perspex canopy to fit my BD5J!  In preparation, I have purchased a Ryobi Cordless Cut Off tool, which has a 4-inch cutting disc which makes light work of the perspex plastic.  I also bought some extra-large 18v batteries, as I was concerned the cut my stop mid-pass and then it would not marry back up properly.

Being the cautious type, I decided to make some practice cuts on an old BD5 main canopy that I had acquired.  I was able to adequately follow the masking tape line marking, with both the plastic and metal cutting discs working well.  The plastic cutter left a larger cut gap of 4mm and the metal disc just 2.5mm.

Temperature in the hangar today in Sydney was approx 30 deg C, so everything was beautifully warm!

I have masked up the perspex on the BD5J and will take a run at cutting things tomorrow, now that I have the confidence to get into it!
